Start Walking Right from the Hotel
One of the greatest advantages of this hike is that it begins directly at Hotel Prinz-Luitpold-Bad in Bad Oberdorf. No bus, no parking search, no travel time – simply lace up your hiking boots and set off.
After just a few minutes, you'll find yourself immersed in the peaceful mountain landscape of the Allgäu.
The first section follows the Andreas-Gross Trail, climbing gently through largely shaded forest. Especially on warm spring and summer days, this makes for an exceptionally pleasant start. It allows you to settle into a comfortable rhythm before reaching the more exposed mountain slopes.
Climbing the Palmwand Trail with Panoramic Views
The Palmwand Trail is one of the most scenic sections of the hike. During our walk, we were delighted to spot several Lady’s Slippers, one of Europe’s most beautiful native orchid species.
Passing the Iseler Platz Hut – a good place for a short break, although no longer staffed – the path becomes steeper and more alpine in character. From this point onwards, sure-footedness and sturdy hiking boots are essential.
At the Summit of the Iseler: Panoramic Views Across the Allgäu Alps
After around two and a half hours, you reach the summit cross at 1,876 metres.
The views from the top are truly remarkable. The Allgäu Alps, the Ostrachtal Valley, and the Tannheimer Valley stretch out below, while on clear days the panorama extends far into the Tyrolean Alps.
We particularly enjoyed the refreshing mountain breeze at the summit, making it a wonderful place to rest even on warmer days. This combination of exercise, fresh mountain air, and expansive views is precisely what makes the Iseler one of the most popular hiking mountains in the Allgäu.
Return Route via the Wiedhag-Alpe and Ochsenalpe
The descent leads towards the Wiedhag-Alpe, an excellent place for a leisurely and delicious break. In addition to traditional snacks, they also serve hearty warm dishes.
The trail then continues past the recently reopened Ochsenalpe – also highly recommended – before following the historic Joch Road back to Bad Oberdorf and eventually returning to the hotel you left on foot just a few hours earlier.
This combination of summit experience, alpine meadows, and varied trails is what makes this circular route so appealing.
Tips for Hiking the Iseler
What to Bring
- Sturdy hiking boots
- Plenty of water
- Sun protection and a hat
- A light windproof jacket (depending on the weather)
- A small snack
- Hiking poles for the descent
Although the first part of the route is pleasantly shaded, there is very little shade near the summit. Good sun protection is therefore highly recommended.
Best Time of Year for the Hike
The trail is generally accessible from May through October.
In early summer, the alpine meadows are covered with flowers, while autumn often offers exceptionally clear views across the mountains. In snowy or icy conditions, the route should only be attempted by experienced hikers with appropriate equipment.

This circular hike is particularly well suited to:
